A 76 × 38 mm regimental stand for Volley & Bayonet

Volley & Bayonet became one of the most popular XVIII e XIX secolo warfare simulation games shortly after it was published. A special feature of Volley & Bayonet is that the miniature figurines of a tactical formation are mounted on a single battalion, regimental, o brigade stand which remains in play until the entire unit is destroyed o dispersed, e removed from the field of battle. Fanteria regiments are mounted on regimental stands 76 mm wide e 38 mm deep, fanteria e cavalleria brigades use 76 × 76 mm brigade stands. The strength of a reggimento o brigade is expressed in terms of strength points, which are monitored on a roster sheet kept by the owning player.

The number of soldatini on a battalion, regimental, o brigade stand has no influence on the game. Players may chose any figure scale e turn their stands into miniature dioramas con as few o as many troops as they like. In 1:72 scale, ten to 15 fanteria o cinque cavalleria soldatini are enough to fill a brigade stand. Battaglioni d’artiglieria con 12 artiglieria pieces consist of one model gun e tre o quattro cannonieri on a 38 mm wide e 76 mm deep artiglieria stand. Tactical elements of this type are attractive to look at, easy to maneuvre during game-play, they require little pick-up time after battle, e they protect the prudentamente painted soldatini against damage.

Reggimento fanteria bavarese di Kurprinz con 13 soldatini in scala 1:100, mounted on a 76 mm wide e 38 mm deep regimental stand. The reggimento has a starting strength of 1000 to 1500 men, equivalent of due o tre strength points (SP). Granatieri are present, e the reggimento has cannoni reggimentali attached. The 100 × 150 mm town block in the background may be occupied by due reggimenti di fanteria o one brigade. Narrow town houses are arranged around a 76 × 76 mm town square in the center of the block. The town square is filled con a fountain, trees, o additional houses, when it is not needed for the deployment of troops.

Fanteria marches 4.5 km per hourly game turn sulle strade, o advances 1000 to 1500 m across country. Volley & Bayonet e Empire are among the few regolamenti di wargame con realistic march rates per hour.

Cavalleria Saving Throws

While fanteria was commited to the line of battle ed ordered to hold its ground, cavalleria was often permitted to redeploy to a more advantageous position ed evade fuoco nemico in the process. Accordingly, Volley & Bayonet allows cavalleria units hit by fuoco nemico to withdraw ed attempt a saving throw to negate the hit effect.
