Cosacchi Russi delle Guerre Napoleoniche
The term "Kosak", probably of origine turco, describes an independent man, adventurer o vagabond. The Slavik Cosacchi hosts were established in the XVI secolo, when the Muscovite laws of serfdom were tightened up in order to permanently tie the peasants to Russian soil. Thousands of people fled into the uninhabited grass steppe along the Don e Dnjepr rivers, an area bordered by the Muscovite Empire in the North, the Polish-Lithuanian State in the West, e the Khanates in the South e East. Cosacchi paid no poll-tax, they lived in a truly democratic e very religious society, ed in the XIX secolo they were considered exceptionally hospitable e cleanly. In 1802, the number of Cosacchi on active military duty was estimated at 100,000 men, approximately 22 percent dell’armata russa. Cosacchi were excellent scouts, who continuously harrassed ed attacked the enemy during ed advance o withdrawal.

Depending on the size of the Cosacchi host, reggimenti Cosacchi should have had 500 to 1,000 men, organized into squadrons (sotnia) of 100 lancieri Kazaki (Cosacchi) led by a Rittmeister, due to tre subalterns, an ensign, e ten NCOs. This regimental strength was rarely maintained in the field. During the 1812–1814 campaigns, the average regimental strength was between 80 e 120 men. Cosacchi russi were recruited from Don Cosacchi, Ural Cosacchi, Black Sea Cosacchi, Tschurgujewski Cosacchi, Orenburg Cosacchi, Caucasian Cosacchi, Sibirian Cosacchi, Bug Cosacchi, Ukrainian Cosacchi, ed other hosts. The Don Cosacchi contributed the largest contingent of the Cosacchi hosts con more than 14,000 men in 1802.
